Who I Am Inside
Likes: writing, reading, listening to silent films, mimes, watching other people's movements, helping others, learning, adventures, seeing the world, drums(he can feel the vibrations).
Dislikes: music(he can't hear it), bullies, not being understood, getting in trouble for not answering, being accused of ignoring someone who's speaking to him, learning new languages(he can't hear them or speak them), being treated disabled, getting special treatment.
Strengths: sign language, silent improv, writing stories, reading lips, understanding body language, helping others, geography, rhythm, dancing.
Weaknesses: being understood, understanding others, speaking(he can say very little and it's hard to understand), hearing(he's deaf), being treated equal, languages, being a leader.
Fears: being treated different, never getting a job, never finding love(he's different), sound(he has no idea what it's like and worries what will happen if he ever does get his hearing).
Personality: Chris is a very friendly and loving teen. He will go out of his way to make friends and do anything for them. His one problem? He was born deaf. He rarely speaks as he doesn't know how to say most words(how can he when he can't hear what he says) and he has never heard a single sound in his life. He can sign excellently but most people do not understand sign language, forcing him to constantly write what he wants to say on a page in a notebook and show it to them. For this reason, it is harder for Chris to be understood and taken seriously than most kids. Nonetheless, Chris goes out of his way to be like every other kid and hates to be treated differently for his condition that most people treat as a disability. It is just part of Chris's every day life and he finds it hard to understand why others cannot see that.
Chris is quite smart but struggles to understand some things. Reading lips in class can become time consuming and therefore some things get lost in translation. Despite this, Chris does quite well in school, so long as he is not in a language class, as than he fails drastically. Chris has had a passion for the drums since he first sat at the table, tapping a beat. He can feel the vibrations and has become quite good at drumming over the years. It is one of his enjoyments and he would lose a piece of himself if he was n longer allowed to drum.
Chris is like every other teen, searching for true love. He wants someone to love him for who he is. He worries he will never be loved because he can't hear. He lives life tot he fullest without his hearing and yet he worries that love and a career will be impossible due to this. This fear often lingers in the back of his mind. Chris is quite a happy teen but a slight longing and worry or curiosity can always be seen on his face. His wide eyes show this longing although he doesn't show it openly.
Despite his inability to hear, Chris has a love for reading and writing and he hopes to one day make a career out of this, even if it is a small one. He also loves improv and physical comedy as he knows how to show his moods and thoughts with his body. He can make many people laugh with the way he carries himself and it is one of the few ways he can express himself without uttering a single sound or word. He loves doing these things and making himself heard and noticed while being silent. Chris is a good kid and all he wants is to be noticed, equal, and loved. Give him a shot. He may just become your most loyal friend.

History: Chris was born on the chinese new year to two loving parents, the youngest child in the family. They welcomed the new child with open arms and ears but were amazed. The child did not cry. The doctors examined him and discovered he was deaf. He would most likely never hear. His family was in shock and had no clue what to do. None of them were deaf and both parents' careers relied on words and speech. How could they handle a son who could not hear and would most likely never speak as a result? They took him home and began figuring out what to do.
They loved Chris dearly and raised him the best they could but they had to keep a tutor and aid in their house for many years teaching Chris how to sign and some basic words as well as many other things that could not be explained to him in words. This woman also helped teach the family sign language so that they could communicate to their son. He attended school with his aid at his side for the first year and it was quickly decided he would learn better in a specialty school. And so, after kindergarten Chris was transferred to a school for the deaf and blind in the area.
Chris grew up surrounded almost constantly by his aid or other children like him and he hated it. He wanted to be like his siblings and all their friends but he was kept separate. All he wanted was to hear and speak and run around with everyone else but he was treated different. The older he got, the more he grew angry at his aid and his family and the school for treating him so different and fragile. He couldn't hear but otherwise he was the same as everyone else.
One morning his parents went to take him to school and he yelled "NO". Although mumbled and a bit hard to be understood, he had spoken and they had understood. The parents cried, both in joy and sadness. Their son had spoken but he could still never be like anyone else. They tried to explain but Chris persisted. It was decided that Chris would be allowed to go to a normal school if he could prove he could handle this.
Chris worked hard and learned all he could. He began writing short stories and articles for a small newsletter. He also began learning drums, loving the rhythm he could feel. He began working hard to learn more words to speak and his grades were soon higher than anyone had ever expected. He had shown he could manage normal education with a bit of help and his parents had to keep their promise.
The family began looking for schools and soon a school had heard about this boy and began trying to get in touch with them. The connection was made and the school Yen Sid Academy, offered them a small scholarship if Chris would attend their school. They also assured the family that there was staff on duty that could help him with any assignments that needed to be signed for him. Chris was excited when he heard the news and immediately accepted. This would be his first step to being normal.
His family was slow to respond, fearing sending their baby away to the other side of the US to a place with strangers. He couldn't speak; how would he survive there. But Chris was so excited they had to at least give him a chance. He went and did quite well his first year, making a friend or two and befriending Professor Hootford, who often translated assignments for him and chatted with him. He stayed with this professor over the summer, overjoyed at the year despite a few troubles and he couldn't wait to go back. He went home for a few weeks after his sophomore school year began for some doctor visits and to have a little time to visit with his family. He is arriving back and is ready to trek through another long but worthwhile year at the academy. He is proving himself and all he can hope is that nothing will get in his way.
