Marshall grabbed the restroom pass and walked slowly down the halls of Yen Sid. It might be a different school but it was the same Marshall. He knew this routine liken the back of his hand it was always the same one when he got bored during class. The teachers ussually caught on sooner or later but right now saying he was constipated or had diahrrea would by him a few weeks of wasting time in the restroom. Then only part he hadn't thought through was the fact that this was a boarding school and that he would be put on medication for his "severe constipation". Cheeking the pill was working but there were days that he had no choice but to swallow. Those days were the worst because the pill gave his regular system the runs. Luckily today wasn't one of those days. He had out smarted the nurse today by hiding it under his tongue then coughing it intones hand.
Marshall made it to the restroom and was surprised to find he actually had to go. He was in the middle of empty his bladder at one of the porcelain urinals when somebody walked in. Marshall lifted his head up and down, body language was a huge part of Marshall. His mannerism were picked up in the Chicago ghetto where body language showed dominance. Despite living in that harsh environment for 14 years Marshall was still a goofy kid. The head life simply meant he acknowldged the boys presence it was what came next that signified Marshall was friendly. Marshall attempted to flash a friendly smile but thanks to the circumstances it was mighty awkward. Marshall put his head down, zippered his pants, and looked once more at the boy. He quickly washed his hands and leaned against the wall knowing he had time to kill. "Hi." He spoke as lifted hisnhand in a lazy wave.

Chris sat in class focused on the lesson when he suddenly needed to pee. He hated missing class as it could be quite hard to catch up especially when the teacher was in the mood to cover massive amounts of information quickly. Today was one of those days. Nonetheless he could tell he wouldn't be able to wait. And so against his better judgement he grabbed the bathroom pass and excused himself silently and quickly from the classroom and began walking down the hall at a quick pace in the hopes of not missing too much. He also didn't trust people to leave his laptop be so the sooner he got back the better.
When Chris entered the bathroom he found another boy was in there as well. This wasn't unusual of course as it was the bathroom. Everyone had to go sometime right? Nonetheless Chris was a bit uncomfortable. The boy was seemingly starting a conversation with his body language while he was at the urinal. Was this the norm? If so, Chris was uncomfortable with it. He no longer felt that he had to pee and was about to leave when they boy zipped his pants up and walked over to him.
The boy began talking to him and although Chris couldn't hear him, he could easily make out the one word 'Hi'. Chris waved back and than just stood there, looking at the boy and than the floor. He had come here to pee and run back to class. He had no idea how he would communicate with this kid if he didn't know sign language. He had no paper on him and his laptop was back in the classroom. He would be stuck with a barrier of silence blocking him from communicating if this boy couldn't understand. His biggest worry was a reality for him now and he was kicking himself internally for not having anyway to communicate. He knew better.
After a moment of silent pondering, Chris decided he only had one way to find out if this would be a disaster or not. He held up his hand and slowly, tentatively signed I'm Chris, spelling out each letter of his name for good measure. he than pointed to his ear and than shook his head NO in the hopes that the boy would be able to understand that he couldn't hear. Than he dropped his hands once more and went back to looking at the boy, as if deciding whether to run or stay. Many things were flooding his mind and he had yet to decide what to listen to the most.

Leaning against the wall Marshall couldn't help but the notice the guy looked might scared. Well this was AWKWARD. Why the guy seemed uncomfortable was beyond Marshall until the guy started to sign. Looking careful at the guys hands Marshall tried to make out the most he could. Marshall's ASL was limited to what he had picked up from Fingers the ex-thug who lived in the apartment above him in Chicago. Finger had taught him 'get inside lock the door', 'it's going down tonight', and 'can I borrow some sugar'. His own curiosity and google had taught him how to spell his name so when the boy started using letters Marshall quickly recognized a few. He didn't know the whole alphabet but he knew the letters M-A-R-S-H-L. the boys fingers made out what Marshall guessed was a C, then an H, an R, something else, and an S. That spelled C-H-R-?-S... the fouth letter did look alot like an I and it did spell Chris. That must be the guys name unless he got the first letter wrong. Marshall decided to take a chance and call the kid Chris. " Hi Chris? I'm...M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L" Marshall spoke the first few words but pointed to his chest and spelled Marshall.
Marshall hoped the boy wouldn't throw anything difficult at him sure he was great a charades but ASL was damn confusing. Unless the boy started to talk about gang violence Marshall would for sure have no idea what the boy was signing. Marshall smiled kind of pleased with himself for knowing a little bit of Sign Language. He didn't couldn't carry a conversation but maybe his killer sharades skills would pay off. " Listen... Ugh...Well, look I don't know how to sign." He spoke it all but signed the words he knew. In this case the only words were look and sign. Marshall threw in some made up signs of his own in hopes that it would make it easier to understand.
Of all the people that had to walk in to the restroom it had to be a deaf guy. Not that he minded Marshall was sure the guy would get along just great with him. Who wouldn't want to be friends with Marshall he was plain awesomeness.

Chris quickly realized that although this boy DID know a few odd and end words, he didn't truly know how to sign. The language barrier (or sound barrier... depending on how you viewed it) was back up once more, cutting Chris off in a sense. He was glad this boy was at least trying to communicate with him. It was just an unlucky turn of events. Ironic considering people always told him he was lucky; he was as unlucky as you could get most of the time. Oh well no one was lucky all of the time.
Chris found this guy funny just from his body language so he couldn't marine what he must be like to hearing people. Chris wanted to get to know this boy but was unsure how this would work right now while they had no easy way to communicate and anyone could walk in at any minute. Chris decided he wanted to try to meet up with this boy at his dorm later. And so Chris began the hard work of attempting to mime out what he wished he could say.
Chris made a questioning posture, arms spread out and face looking confused. Than he pointed to Marshall and held the point for a moment before moving on to the last part of his question. Lastly he pointed in the direction of the dorm rooms and than made a motion of sleeping on his hands. Where do you live? This was what Chris was fighting to get across. He than started a second sentence, three words and three syllables only. He grabbed onto the frame of the door and hung from it for a moment. Than he jumped down and pointed out the door. Lastly he pointed to the clock on the wall and than gestured forward. Hang out later?
Chris was unsure if Marshall would figure it out but he hoped he could. He had no other way to truly communicate and this was the best he could do. He didn't want to lose this friend and he was desperate to get through to him. He stopped moving around and waited, looking at the boy and hoping that this would work. It was all he had and he had to hope that luck was on his side.

The lack of communication medium should have given Chris a proper excuse to ignore Marshall and go about his business but here he was trying his best to communicate with Marshall. Marshall wished he knew ASL but the truth was he didn't and he'd just have to make do. Marshall had to give the props his facial expressions impeccable." Ok first word question?.... No wait it's a question. Me sleep? What? Oh you want to know my dorm. 6" Marshall head out six fingers at the same time he wondered why Chris wanted to know. Hopefully it wasn't to get him in trouble.
Marshall had understood the first sentence with ease but the second was a bit tougher. Marshall flashed his confused smile. The boy trapped on to the door frame jumped down and then pointed at the door and the clock. Marshall but everything together and came up with Jump Me Outside later. Marshall had left Chicago to avoid this type of trouble and he had puns it at yen sod." What buddy jump me outside later? You for real? Just cause your deaf don't mean I'm gonna take easy on you. I got a black belt in karate thank very much." it was a lie but Marshall was trying his best to scare the boy away.he didn't want to start anything with Chris.Marshall was smart enough to know that the teacher would take the side of the handicap student at the end of the day. Marshall had disappointed his family once and he didn't plan to do it again. Marshall couldn't fathom what he had done to make the boy want to jump him.
There had to be some kind of misunderstanding here because everything seemed fine at first. Chris didn't look like the toe of guy to be violent. He looked friendly and like a person Marshall could imagine himself chilling with. Marshall really wished communicating with Chris was easier.

Chris felt at a loss as he watched the boy attempt to figure it out. Although the boy spoke too quickly for Chris to catch more than every second or third word Chris could tell by his body language that this was not going well and he was in trouble. Well hopefully now he would learn to always check he had paper and a pen with him before he went anywhere. This charades was not going well and he could end up in serious trouble all because of a stupid misunderstanding and miscommunication. He felt so stuck and all alone, more boxed in than he had felt in so long.
Chris decided he had to give it one more try. This boy seemed so nice and he truly wanted to make friends with him. If it didn't work this time he would bolt out of the bathroom and back to class before this boy could beat him. If he had to he would work it out later but he'd rather get away now than get a beating for something he didn't mean to say, whatever it was he DID say. At this point he could probably say 'I eat toenail clippings for breakfast with week old goat cheese' and it would be taken wrong but he felt he had to try.
And so with a pause and an audible sigh, Chris prepared himself for super charades one last time. He thought for a moment and than began. He first pointed at Marshall and than at himself- you and me. He than hugged himself and shivered- chill. He paused for a moment before continuing, making a motion similar to talking with his hands- talk. Lastly he pointed to the clock and moved his finger clockwise several times- later, when classes are over. Than Chris looked at Marshall, a questioning look on his face.
As Chris waited for the boy to figure out his actions and hopefully piece them together he thought to himself Please figure it out. I don't know how else to tell you. This thought played over and over in his head as the seconds ticked by and his heart pounded in his chest. All he wanted was a friend and now he was preparing to run for his life. Who would have expected this when they had sent him here? No one. How could they? Even he hadn't seen this coming.

DAMN! This was confusing. So did this dude want to brawl or was it something else? By the body language that Chris presented it didn't seem like he was the IM'A CUT YO THROAT OUT kind . Chris looked like he was desperate to convey something other than when and where a fight would be occurring so, Marshall decided to give this one more shot. He carefully looked at the guys movements before admitting to himself that maybe he had over exaggerated his charades super power. quite frankly Mashall didn't have a clue why the kid was shaking. Maybe he was having a siezure or somethin'. But that wasn't likely so Marshall replayed the motions in his head one last time. "Me and you Siezure?hug? Cold?"
This was so no working, than bam a light bulb turned on in his head. Marshall turned towards the mirror hanging on the wall and leaned in closely. Only about millimeter away from his lips touching the glass Marshall exhaled deeply causing the mirror to fog up. He ran his finger across the mirror spelling "U & I __________?" Genius! Now that was resourceful. Marshall signaled for the boy to fill in the blank by gesturing and then waited to see what the boy would write.
This encounter had taken longer than the initial time Marshall had planned to take in the bathroom. This only meant one thing he was in for some laxatives and a date with the porcelain chair if the nurse found out how long today's potty break had taken. Just think about it made him shiver. DANG! Well hopefully this guy was worth it. He did seem pretty chill and Marshall was sure they'd be cool.

Chris watched this boy as he walked towards the mirror and fogged it up with his breath. Chris still felt wary of him and was ready to run, that is until he saw the boy writing in the dew on the mirror left behind by the air he had breathed out. Chris read what was written and a lightbulb went off in his head. He whacked himself with his palm on his forehead and shook his head in disbelief that he hadn't thought of this first. When you have no source of communicating use all you have on hand. This was the first thing he had been taught and he had forgotten it so easily without use. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! was all that went through his head as he continued to face palm himself for missing such an obvious opportunity to communicate and miss this whole mess entirely.
Once he had calmed down, Chris approached the mirror and blew on it to refog the glass. He than filled in the blank with two words- HANG OUT. Chris than walked away from the mirror and pointed at the words at the bottom before looking back at Marshall, the questioning look still written all over his face. He was still worried about being beaten up or mocked or having his head shoved down a toilet. He had a feeling everything was cool now but you never knew. People could easily still hurt you just for fun and although Marshall didn';t seem like the type, Chris wasn't going to feel safe until they were out of the bathroom and he was back in class and he wouldn't know for sure everything was cool until the agreement had been made and they'd actually hang out. Only than could Chris truly relax and know everything would work out and be fine between them. And after all the miscommunication and stress this meeting had caused, Chris honestly couldn't blame him if something DID happen. He deserved it by most people's standards and he knew it. Hopefully Marshall wasn't most people though or he'd have a toilet head for the rest of the day.

Marshall stood back and waited fir the guy Chris to write out his response. Once Chris was done smudging his response on the mirror Marshall stepped forward and leaned in to read the response A's quick as possible. The edges of the words were a little faded but Marshall was able to read the words Hang Out clear as day. An expression of relief filled his face. A friend? Had he just made a friend in the restroom? Hell Yeah!
Marshall turned his head towards Chris and simply nodded yes. When and where would have to be determined at a later point because right now the teacher would probably send a search party if he took any longer. Marshall didn't want to just walk out on the guy that would be rude so he spoke, slowly and carefully. " We'll meet later, I'll find you." Finding Chris wouldn't be to hard to find all he have to do is ask where the deaf guy was.
Marshall hoped Chris understood that because he really needed to go now. Marshall looked forward to chilling with Chris but for now it was back to class. Marshall waved his hand in a goodbye and headed towards the door. Walking backgrounds and still facing Chris, Marshall said " Goodbye see ya later." The big goofy smile was on his face like always and he walked out of the restroom feeling accomplished.
