Chris was standing on the stage in the theater looking around as he thought. He had come here to work on his improv skits and get some feedback from Professor Jinn. Despite her eccentric personality, she was able to understand him and help him and he found her funny just in her movements and actions.
Chris was waiting a few minutes and began wondering where she was. Than he felt the vibrations of footsteps on the floor behind him and he turned around to see who it was. Before he could see who it was, the lights went out. Chris banged his foot on the floor twice in the hopes that whoever it was would find him and than pulled out his keyring. He had a small flashlight on it. He lit it up and began using it to look around. He knew someone was here but he wanted to be able to see who. He stood still and shone the light in the direction the person had been coming from. He waited and soon enough the person appeared. Who it was surprised him.

He had some free time before class was going to start, and had walked in to the theater with the sole purpose of asking Professor Jinn about the Spring Musical when the lights cut out. Dodge had come just inside the theater and was walking around backstage when it all turned dark, sending his heart into a second of jitters. The onslaught of darkness had scared him, as it would any normal being, but he quickly recovered himself with a deep breath.
Further in front of him on the stage, he heard two distinctive thumps. Figuring someone was trying to get his attention, he tried to move around the props and sets as quickly, but carefully as possibly. More than once he smacked his knee against an unknown object, but Dodge bit back the pain and felt for the opening curtain so he could walk onto the main stage. He looked around, but couldn't distinguish anything in the pitch black room--until a light came on to his left, illuminating a portion of the wooden floor. He walked towards the light, squinting as it was pointed directly in his vision. "Dude, tone it down a little? It's kinda bright." He complained, putting his hand up in a stop motion towards the light, hoping to block the beams. As the other person lowered their light his face became illuminated, and Dodge smiled. It was his roomie, Chris.
Dodge immediately stuck his hand up in a wave, the signature look being a lazy "gun" shape cocked to the side. He pointed up to the ceiling, at the lights, his shoulders shrugging as he spoke as clearly as he could, so Chris could read his lips. "Know what happened?" He asked, wondering where Professor Jinn was. Maybe she could clue them in on what made all the lights go out, and figure out a way to fix it.

Chris was happy to see it was his roommate. Dodge was a nice guy and very understanding. Dodge often spoke slowly so that Chris could read his lips and understand what he was saying. Dodge also had learned some basic words in sign language, making it a bit easier for Chris. Nonetheless, Chris sometimes forgot that Dodge knew very little sign language and so he replied calmly and without thinking Dodge might not understand.
First Chris shook his head no in response to what might have caused the blackout. Than he pointed to himself and than made a fist, thumb out, with one hand and a first, thumb and pointer finger out, with the other and ran the first fist over the second. Chris was saying he was here for practice. He went to continue signing when the thought occurred that Dodge probably didn't understand him.
And so Chris bent down and picked up his notebook and pen and wrote out I came here to practice. The lights went out. Why are you here? He than turned the notebook towards Dodge and shone his flashlight on the page before pointing at Dodge and then the page. He knew Dodge would understand he wanted him to read what had been written. He gave Dodge a moment to read and than he looked at the roommate.
Chris rarely saw Dodge in the theater so this was unusual. Chris was extremely curious as to why he was here. Chris did n't know if Dodge sang or performed but Chris knew Dodge was a great athlete. He often cheered on the boy at games as he had little else to do. He was actually very grateful his roommate was here. Chris was not fond of the dark since he could no longer rely on his eyes either. At least he felt safer with Dodge around.
Chris looked around a bit. He was starting to wonder where Professor Jinn was. He wasn't terribly concerned but he was a bit confused. It was not like her to be late. Maybe she had turned the lights out so she could have a grand entrance? Chris shrugged off the thought and decided when she arrived, she would make herself known. No use looking for her when you were enveloped in darkness.

The light wasn't quite bright enough to see the movement of Chris' hands as the flashlight he was holding whipped back and forth as he moved. Raising an eyebrow and shaking his head slowly, Dodge began to laugh, amused by his roommate's actions. He knew that Dodge wasn't very adept at sign language yet-- at the most he was a beginner since his "vocabulary" consisted only of a few signs, and those were limited to things like "home", "how are you", "good" and his name. Of course, Chris was teaching him more, but it was difficult stuff!
He read the note that Chris had written and nodded, to show Chris that he had finished reading. He reached over to grab Chris' flashlight and notebook and sat down on the theater floor, placing the flashlight bulb-up to illuminate the two. He waved his hand to motion Chris to sit, scribbling out a note back to Chris so he wouldn't have to enunciate every word he spoke, and still risk Chris not catching the right word.
I'm trying to meet with Prof. Jinn. You seen her? He handed the notepad back to Chris and looked around the theater, limited in vision by the circle of light that surrounded them. It was strange that Professor Jinn wasn't in the theater, considering this was her main hang-out... Dodge tapped his hands against his knees, drumming out a lazy beat while clacking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. If there were girls here, or something, then maybe the dark wouldn't be so... boring. Not that Chris wasn't entertaining, but Dodge could only go so long without talking it up with a pretty girl.... Chris followed Dodge's gesture and sat around the flashlight. He watched as Dodge wrote as there was little else to be seen. He could read a few words upside down but not enough to read the full sentence. So eh waited to read what was written until Dodge was finished. He than took back the notebook and began to read. It took him but a moment to read the simple message. Chris looked up and shook his head no at Dodge. Apparently they were both curious as to where their flamboyant professor was. Chris shrugged and began to write a reply. I was wondering the same thing. Maybe she turned the lights out. She does like theatrics, doesn't she? Chris pushed the notebook back in the direction of Dodge and couldn't help but notice the look on his face as he did so. Dodge seemed bored. Dodge was always a talker and so it made sense he'd be bored around the silent deaf kid. Chris couldn't help but feel bad. Of all the people to be stuck with, Chris was not exactly the best choice, especially for such a vocal teen. He shrugged it off though and put a smile on his face. At least they were together right?

Taking the notebook back from Chris, he shook his head back and forth. No, Professor Jinn wouldn't have left the lights on for so long, despite loving dramatic entrances. She was one to be seen, and prolonged darkness would only make her frustrated... at least, that's what Dodge gathered from knowing her for a few years. Looking up at Chris, he saw the kid's face drop, then brighten back up into a smile. Feeling bad that he had been tapping his fingers a second ago, and knowing that Chris was a visual person and had probably determined that Dodge was bored, the older teen quickly scrawled out another message, handing the notebook back.
Not to this level... It doesn't matter. What were you going to practice? Talking about the dark won't fix it.
It was true, talking about the darkness that surrounded them wouldn't fix the issue. For all they knew, Professor Jinn was trying to fix it right now, and the lights would be on in no time. At least now they could try and chat about something over paper, rather than trying to determine the cause of the blackout.
Tapping his foot to a beat in his head, Dodge began to sing under his breath, barely moving his lips as the words eased in and out of his throat. He was practicing his audition piece for the school musical; sort of an embarrassing reason for being in the theater. He had come today to sing his audition piece to Jinn, in hopes of getting feedback. Sure, sports were a great way to pass the time, but participating in the musical also helped him meet chicks. And singing wasn't so bad; he had a pretty manly voice so the guys on the team couldn't really make fun of him.
Not that they dared to,anyway. Dodge could take 'em all down in a second if they tried.

Why must people go through the costumes and take pieces. She knew it was near Halloween time and many students didn't have the time to buy costumes but that was no reason to take the costumes she took such pride in. It also concerned her. What if someone blamed her? I mean not like they could, what would she do with a size 2 juliet dress and a feather boa? But one never knew. If they wanted to fire her they would find a reason and this incident would only add to it.
She had her rhinestone covered maglite in her hand and was looking through a box of corsets when the lights went out. "Are you serious?" she muttered standing up. She looked over at the door "Whoever did that please turn them back on." When nobody turned them on she walked over to the door and flipped the switch. Then she flipped it again. "Huh that's strange." She walked through the corridor from the costume room, past the dressing rooms to near the wings where the circut breakers were. She looked at it. Everything looked fine. Then it clicked, power outage. She'd heard about strong winds. But she couldn't be sure. She heard tapping and remembered. "Chris" she muttered. He was coming in to practice.
Walking towards the stage she called "Chris?" Then she remembered, Chris is deaf. He wouldn't hear her. He must be terrified the poor dear. To be deaf and now unable to see. She saw a little light. It must be Chris. The brilliant boy had a small flashlight. She shined her light towards him and saw Dodge. "Dodge? What are you doing here?" He was not an unwelcome visitor just strange. "You two darlings ok?"

Chris was a bit surprised by his roommate's response but he had to agree. Talking about the dark didn't make anything better. If anything it made the situation worse. Chris took the notebook back and quickly scrawled out his response in his elegant handwriting. I do improv like Charlie Chaplan the silent movie actor used to do. It's physical comedy and has no sound. I practice after school sometimes and get some suggestions from Professor Jinn. It also helps to try things out for her before I try performing it for anyone else. Chris looked down at the paper and couldn't help but frown at his handwriting before handing it off. For a boy, he had very feminine handwriting. For some reason this bothered him greatly although he tried not to show it. He let the thought linger for a moment and than pushed it out of his mind. Just than, he saw another light from the audience. This was soon followed by the figure of the professor, a smile on her face and a flashlight in her hand.Chris stood up a bit hurriedly and excitedly as Professor Jinn walked over to them. In his excitement Chris forgot to focus on her lips and missed what she had said. All he did was smile his quirky smile and wave hi before turning to look at Dodge. Chris felt out of the loop, as if he had missed something. For once, his lack of hearing had hindered him and he was lost. So he just stood there, looking at Dodge, a confused look on his face. Hopefully Dodge could explain what he missed. Otherwise, Chris would be pretty lonely in a room with people and it had been a long time since he had felt this way. All he knew was he did't want to be left out and he had a feeling that the two others would not let him be left out.

Cody was caught by surprise when the lights suddenly went out. He had been trying to get to the library to check out some books for his classes when it happened, but somehow had ended up in the school theater instead. He was a new student and didn't really know his way around the school campus yet, and now he was trapped in a dark building with no idea how to get out. He looked around for a way out for a few minutes before he heard people talking. Deciding to find the source of the talking, he followed the voices to the stage and saw a small light illuminating three figures in the dark. Being a shy person, Cody took a moment of hesitation before announcing his presence. "Uh, g'day," He said quietly to let them know he was there. He walked over to the small group. "I'm Cody, I'm new here." He said, introducing himself to the new faces. "Do any of you know why the lights went out? I was looking for the library when it happened..." He hoped they knew how to get out, but couldn't help but doubt that. If they knew what happened, why would they still be standing on the dark stage?

Chris was surprised when he felt the vibrations of another person in the room. How many people had stopped after school at the theater today and gotten trapped. He did find the whole situation a bit funny but not extremely. He turned his attention to the new addition and his face sunk. This boy was not familiar to Chris at all. This worried Chris as most people who knew him knew to speak slowly or write what they said on paper for him. This newcomer was speaking fairly quickly or rather much to quickly for Chris to understand. Chris got a confused look on his face. Now he was most surely out of the loop. What had the boy said? Who was the boy? What was he doing here? Chris's head was swimming with questions and it made his head hurt. Chris scribbled out a quick message and than pushed it in the direction of the new boy. All he could do was hope that the boy would understand. It read: I'm Chris. Who are you? Chris remained silent and still, hoping that he would be pulled into the conversation. He didn't wanna be left out. He didn't want to be alone.

Dodge read what Chris had wrote quickly, nodding his understanding. That made sense; he'd seen Chris practicing every once in a while, and thought the kid was funny. Of course, he'd never seen any of Charlie Chaplin's work, so he had nothing to really compare it to, but Dodge always got a kick out Chris' routine. Especially when he practiced in the dorm room... usually it could end up with something breaking.
Dodge sighed happily upon seeing the wavering light enter, heading towards the stage. He bumped his roommate's shoulder, nodding his head towards the light, guessing that it was Prof. Jinn making her debut into the darkness. But, since she had a flashlight and there weren't any fireworks going off, it was safe to say that the darkness that encompassed them hadn't been her doing. He heard Pro. Jinn call out Chris' name and raised an eyebrow; she knew the kid was deaf, and she was still calling out? Oh, well. "Hey, Professor..." He greeted, waving his hand slightly as a curved smile touched his lips. "I had a couple questions about the musical, was'all. But yeah, we're fine." He glanced at Chris, making sure he was communicating his feelings right.
Another, new, voice joined the conversation, the tilted accent a different tune compared to Jinn's feminine float of a voice and Dodge's half-grumble. The kid seemed lost, confused... and that was revealed by his comment on trying to find the library when he wandered in here. Smiling at the kid, Dodge shrugged, "Neither of us know," He looked at Chris, leaning his elbow on the younger male's shoulder, "Professor, do you know?"
He watched in silence as Chris tried to communicate with Cody, feeling a little awkward. He wasn't sure if he should tell Cody that Chris was deaf, and that he should speak slower for him or try and enunciate better... Deciding to see what played out, Dodge just watched the group of mismatched students and the single teacher, wondering when the lights would come back on and they could get out of there...

Jinn signed to Chris. She had learned to sign when she was young and was constantly using it. She looked to Dodge and Cody and began to speak and sign at the same time "I have no idea why the lights are not working. I'm sorry. If I had to guess it was a power outage in the school." She shrugged. She didn't really have a good answer. "I can answer any questions you may have Dodge, though this may not be the time. I feel like we should all stay here and relax." She smiled reassuringly. "So 3 C's would you like to do a game to pass the time?" She had to think of something. They couldn't just sit there. That would not help anything. Hopefully just staying calm and passing the time would be good enough.

Cody was a bit surprised when one of the strangers handed him a paper. He looked at it confusedly, but when the teacher started using sign language, he figured it out. "I'm Cody."He said, trying to make his words obvious for lip reading, but realized his slight accent may be a bit confusing and the dim light probably wouldn't be very helpful for lip reading. He decided to write it out on the paper just in case. My name is Cody. It's nice to meet you, Chris. I was just asking if anybody knew what was going on. He handed the paper back before looking at the others. "So, I am guessing your name is Dodge." He said to the other boy. That had to be right, unless it was just a nickname. He looked at the teacher. "I'm sorry, but I didn't catch your name, Professor." He said politely. After all, it would be strange to play a game, as she had suggested, with somebody who's name you didn't know.

"Oh" Professor Jinn said. She had completely forgotten to introduce herself. "Sorry Cody, I am Professor Jinn. I teach Drama and Fashion and Theater and such. I'm basically just dramatic." She smiled. "Sorry I forgot." Jinn shrugged.
She wondered if this boy was the one who had been in the storage room. She hoped not. He seemed like a nice enough boy. Besides what would he have been doing in there? She could think of no reasons. She then realized that there were four boys. This was a theatre in a high school. Rarely were there four boys in a theatre these days. She had to now reconsider her options. Something must be done to utilize this potential.

Chris smiled at Cody after reading the note and waved hi. He was glad the boy had caught on quickly. Some people would just keep talking and be oblivious to Chris's... perdicament. This had brightened his day a bit. A new friend who was willing to write out his replies to Chris and wasn't oblivious to Chris's odd silence. It was a refreshing change.
Chris was watching Professor Jinn's signing and was getting ready to reply, hoping the professor would be willing to translate it back for him, when the lights began flickering and slowly came back on. Chris was surprised by the sudden brightness and blinked away spots from his eyes as he looked at the bunch of people with him. He put away his tiny flashlight in his pocket and stood up, a confused look on his face. The lights had come back on almost as randomly as they had gone out. He looked at the group for an answer he knew they probably would not have for him.
