EJ glanced at his office. It was really kind of bare, and a bit on the small side. And the pastel walls made him sick. He kept meaning to do something about it, make the place a little more...what was the word?...Homey? EJ shrugged to himself and sat at his desk. A small desk calendar, his black MacBook Air, and an ornately framed picture of him and Guest back in their old apartment before they came to Yen Sid greeted him. He smiled at the picture before starting up his laptop. Several things ahead of him today. He was supposed to meet with a few seniors about their plans after leaving Yen Sid: Work force, University, all that jazz.

Of course, EJ was always happy to help out someone in need. He turned to the one filing cabinet he had, opening the drawer marked “College stuff.” on a piece of fading masking tape. He really needed to get new labels for his cabinet. Out of a folder he pulled applications and information packets on some of the better Universities in the area, and some around the country. He didn’t have any international stuff yet, but he was working on it. He also pulled some scholarship info, knowing some of the students at Yen Sid wouldn’t be able to further their education without them. EJ wasn’t sure which students he’d be meeting with today, so he figured it’d be best to have all of his bases covered from the start.

Figuring the first student wouldn’t show up for a bit, EJ decided to relax with some music. He retrieved his iPod from a drawer in his desk filled with some random knick-knacks: a chew toy for Guest, a pocket dictionary, a pack of smokes, and an old photograph. Wondering what sort of pictures he would leave lying around in his desk, EJ picked up the photo. There was something scrawled on the back, and EJ recognized the script as his own. However, age and wear had caused the ink to smudge, but he could definitely tell that something was crossed out.

Turning it over, EJ knew what had been crossed out, and why it had been so. It was an old picture of him and Cristoph from Germany. Probably the one gala of EJ’s father’s that they had attended together, because there were fireworks going off in the background. Edward, as he had been called back then, despite his many protests, had his eyes closed and was smiling, an arm wrapped around someone’s waist. That someone just happened to be Cristoph Feist. Cristoph had his arm around Edward’s waist, mirroring his boyfriend. Cristoph’s head was turned, kissing Edward’s smiling cheek.

To prevent himself from crying, EJ dropped the picture back into the drawer, and slammed it closed, locking it. Despite all outward appearances, the boy in the photograph no longer existed. That boy died when the Modes moved to America. A new man, a stranger had taken his place: EJ. This new man left everything from the boy’s life behind, determined to forge himself a new path in life, not one laid out for him by others. EJ took a deep breath, knowing he had to calm down and get himself together before the first of the students began to arrive.

He desperately wanted a smoke, but knew he didn’t have time. And he was right, because at that moment, someone decided to knock on the door.

“Come in.” EJ said in the steadiest voice he could muster, which even then, sounded shaky and off-kilter.

Hatter walked down the hall to the office wing. He had been told he had to go speak with his new guidance counselor about colleges and his future. Hatter had never really been fond of these meetings, especially because he constantly had new counselors. He had never understood this. Schools never seemed to be able to hang onto one for more than a few months. Hatter had only been here about a year or so and he had been to at least three counselors before this one. How could someone guide you if the barely knew you? And so Hatter walked on, almost positive that this meeting would be as useless as all the ones prior.

Hatter walked up to the door with the name Mr. Edward Mode on it and stopped. This was the place. He rose his hand and knocked before stepping back a step and waiting to be allowed in. Hatter heard a shaky voice tell him to enter and so Hatter placed his hand on the doorknob, wrapping his fingers around it, and turned the handle as he opened the door and walked in.

Hatter saw a relatively young man sitting at the desk before him. He was dressed handsomely- more fashion than basic professional as if the man had spent time either planning or making this outfit. Either way Hatter was impressed and pleased. He had some hopes for this guidance counselor. Maybe this one would stick around. Also maybe this one would understand Hatter better. From first looks, he seemed to understand the importance of fashion much more.

Hatter sat down in one of the cushioned seats opposite the counselor, removing his purple self-designed fedora and placing it on the desk. He than plopped his messenger bag full of books and art supplies on the floor before turning his attention to Mr. Mode. I was told you wanted to see me sir? I am Syrus Hatter and I'm guessing by your door that you are Mr. Mode, my newest guidance counselor. Nice to meet you. Hatter stopped speakign for a moment and than chose to add, Oh and your outfit is stunning. You have a wonderful sense of style.

Hatter fell completely silent after that sitting up in the chair but looking a bit out of place. He was wondering what this counselor would try to convince him to do with his life although he hoped he would let Hatter decide his own future unlike every other guidance counselor. One could hope couldn't they? And this guidance counselor was different in some way so why shouldn't he hope he would be a completely new type of counselor.

The student came in and sat down, introducing himself as Syrus Hatter. His introduction was so...proper. It threw EJ a curve ball. He didn’t expect the students to be this...he couldn’t even find a word for it, it was so stunning. “Um...yes. Call me EJ. Mr. Mode is my father. I really don’t know why Headmaster Yen Sid is so adamant about the title, but it’s whatever.” Upon hearing the compliment on his outfit, EJ looked down. “What? This old thing? I just threw on whatever I had clean this morning. I was kind of in a rush...” Edward let out a small, semi-nervous chuckle. “Although, I suppose spending a few years as an apprentice to one of Germany’s biggest fashion empires kinda breeds the stuff into you, you know?”

EJ smiled to himself and turned back to the documents on his desk. “So, do you have any idea what you wanna do after you graduate from Yen Sid?” He handed Syrus a pamphlet for a university in Ohio. “This place has an excellent fine arts program, music, theatre, the works.” He thought for a minute, then turned back to his filing cabinet. EJ pulled out a few packets from assorted schools, most located around the California area. “All of these,” Edward spread the packets out on the desk, “have some sort of fashion related courses, from merchandising, to design, and I think this one even has some sort of modeling thing.”

EJ tapped one of the packets. He figured now would be best to led Syrus digest all the information, and help narrow down the search. It was EJ’s goal to find what best fit Syrus’s tastes, and help him get ready. After they found a school, or job, if that’s what interested the boy sitting before him, EJ would either find some scholarship information for them to discuss, or he’d get a hold of one of his many contacts, and hopefully set up some sort of job shadowing thing for Syrus. Either way, EJ wasn’t here to decide the path of the young minds that walked the halls of Yen Sid Academy, he was here to connect them to those paths.

He glanced at the purple fedora Syrus had set on his desk. He had a sneaking suspicion the boy had something to do with the hat’s design and creation. EJ had seen a great deal of hats in his day, but none of them look anything quite like this one. Normally, all he had to do was look at a piece of clothing to tell who designed it, because each designer had a very specific style. “I apologize if I sound nosy, but did you design that hat yourself?”

((OOC: Dear lord, I’m sorry for the shortness, and for the lateness. D:))

Hatter was in shock as he listened to his guidance counselor giving some college suggestions. All of the suggestions involved music or theater or art or fashion. How had he known Hatter loved fashion? This man had never met him before and his file didn't say THAT much. So this man had to know more and he was somewhat impressed by this. He still was a bit uncomfortable in the office and had too much being presented to him at once. And than with one question, EJ had Syrus calmed down and comfortable as well as proud.

“I apologize if I sound nosy, but did you design that hat yourself?” Hatter looked up as a wide, crooked grin spread across his face. EJ used to work in the industry and he had noticed that the design of his fedora was unique. Most people didn't notice but just saw an unusual hat and thought Syrus had great fashion sense and shopping skills. This man knew enough about the fashion industry that he could spot Hatter's unique design in a matter of seconds. Hatter's smile grew wider as his pride swelled. "Yes. I am proud to say that hat was a creation all my own. My one of a kind which I have designed and sewn." Hatter paused momentarily before adding, "Do you like it?

Hatter no longer distrusted his guidance counselor. This man had done what he had always wanted to do. Hatter suddenly had a thought cross his mind and he spoke it as his giant grin turned into a look of confusion. "I want to go into the fashion industry sir. Fashion is my love and design my specialty. You say you used to be in the industry. I could never see anything causing me to leave design but I guess something told you that it was time. But what made you choose counseling in the states after doing something so grand. Pardon me for asking but I don't understand?"

Hatter had slipped back into his habit of rhyming and blushed as he realized what he had done. He felt bad that he had done that as it only made his question all the more odd and silly when he truly was confused. If a man had been able to live his dreams in Europe, designing and creating beautiful and new fashions for all the world to see and buy, why would they leave to come to one of the coldest and more rural of areas in the states to be a private school guidance counselor. It seemed like a stretch and Hatter just could not make the connection. It just didn't add up. Something had to of happened.

Despite all of this Syrus never stopped to think that his question had been rude or inappropriate. Hatter very rarely thought before speaking, being known rather for his odd way of speaking and for saying things others didn't. Hatter was so excited to find an adult who might actually understand him and his passion for fashion that he just had let his mouth run. But now he was silent and waiting patiently in his seat for Mr. EJ to speak. Hatter had said all he could think of and could do nothing but wait for his counselor's reactions and response.

EJ supposed he should have expected the question. Syrus had asked him why he had left his job in the fashion industry. It wasn’t something he generally liked to talk about, but he figured it was high time to get it out in the open. He was always telling his students that keeping things bottled up was a bad thing, because it would just build and build until it exploded. And EJ didn’t want to explode. He was sure it would be messy, and he didn’t really want to clean himself up. He wasn’t sure he could clean himself up if he exploded.

“I suppose I do owe you that much, don’t I?” EJ laughed. “I suppose I should start from the beginning. Like I said, I was an apprentice to a German fashion empire. I was actually born in Berlin, but fashion wasn’t exactly what I was born into. Back in Germany, my father owned an oil enterprise. He wanted me to take over the family business. Obviously, with a wish like that, the last thing I was going to do was go into the oil business. Fashion had always been a passion for me, so when a friend of mine and I were offered jobs with the designer, Gale Stratus, maybe you’ve heard of her? Anyway, we jumped at the chance.

“It was going to be the best thing ever. Christoph, the guy who took the job with me, was my best friend on earth, not to mention my--”
EJ faltered. He probably shouldn’t mention that he had been dating Christoph. “Never mind. Anyway, so Christoph and I took the job. It was great for the first few months. After about seven months, though, our competitiveness got ahead of us. Our friendship began to fall apart. It ended with a mistake that someone made that he blamed me for, a mistake that got me fired.

“To make matters worse, around that time, my father was exposed for embezzlement. So he had the brilliant idea of forcing him, my mother, and me to move here. Well, I basically ran away, got a job, an apartment, and a cat. Yes, I have a cat. Anyway, I got an email one day and here I am.”
EJ looked at Syrus and laughed. “And I cannot believe I just told my life story to a high school student. Isn’t it normally the other way around?”

Hatter listened intently to everything that this man had to say. He didn't cut him off and he took everything in and waited until the man was done. And when the man was done, Hatter let the silence settle into the room before moving. Suddenly Hatter stood up and said Thank you for sharing that with me sir. It explains a lot and I know it was personal. Hatter than looked down at his hat and pondered as he continued.

I know people tend to say that 'All is fair in love and war' but I always found that to be an insane concept, even for me. You must have really love Christoph or it wouldn't have hurt you so much. As for your dreams, I'm glad you followed them for the time you could and than came here because now you can help me. Hatter than looked up at Mr. Mode and smiled before looking down at his hat once more.

Hatter extended the hat to Mr. Mode and dropped it before the man on his desk. When you looked at the hat you seemed to like it. It is one of a kind... and I want you to have it. I make hats all the time and have a pile more sitting around in my room. Today was the first day that hat had ever been worn and I only wore it a few minutes before coming here. I'd be honored if you kept it for me. Hatter had worked on that hat for a long time and it was a treasure of his but he wanted Mr. Mode to keep it. Of all the people to have one of his hat, this man was nice enough to share something personal and somewhat inspirational. Hatter would be happy to part with it if only to show this man he was doing the right thing.

Hatter than sat back in his chair and added ,As for who is allowed to vent, everyone has their days. It's not designated solely for students. Do not worry though, your secret is safe with me. Hatter smiled at Mr. Mode and knew inside that this man was his favorite guidance counselor ever. Maybe he could actually trust this man. He seemed to care and he seemed to understand hardship and outrageous dreams. This had made his day and it was only just beginning.

EJ looked down at the hat now sitting on his desk, and then back at Hatter, who had returned to his seat. He was stunned, and didn’t know what to say. There were very few times when Edward James Mode, III was speechless, but here he was, at a loss for words. He was amazed that Hatter had given him such a gift, and that he was so understanding. When most people heard that EJ’s first (and only, but that was definitely something he didn’t advertise) love was another man, they immediately stopped talking to him. He’d lost a lot of friends and even a few jobs that way. Many were also surprised that EJ was bisexual. Aside from his small amount of flamboyance, most thought he was just a slightly metrosexual man.

“I--I don’t know what to say, Syrus. Thank you so much. It’s an honor to have such a well designed hat. I’ll cherish it forever.”

EJ knew it was sappy, but he really didn’t care. He’d never gotten very much acceptance in his life, not from his father, not from his mother, not even from Christoph. EJ was never good enough, and here this teenager, who was at least 10 years EJ’s junior, handing him a hat that had him spiralling into a sappy love fest. EJ knew he should give Hatter something in return but, he didn’t have anything to match the value of what the boy had just given him....or did he? The thought struck Edward like a bolt of lightning, and he turned to unlock his random knick knacks drawer.

He pulled out the old photograph of himself and Christoph and pushed it towards Hatter. “I understand it’s a bit unorthodox, and you probably don’t want an old picture of me and my ex-boyfriend, but I want you to look past that. I want it to serve you as a reminder that who we once were does not have to determine who we become. It’s my gift to you, in return for the hat. And before you can decline, I insist that you have it.”

It felt good to finally have everything off his chest for once, and now he felt much more comfortable around Hatter. “Anyway, back to business. Oh, did I forget to mention? There may be a new addition to this campus, like...a university addition, so if you want to consider that as an option...”

Hatter was overjoyed that Mr. Mode seemed so honored to have his hat. He really had worked quite hard on it and he was glad that a fellow fashionista of sorts could enjoy his handy work. Nonetheless he was a bit surprised by the gift he received in return. A worn old picture... how odd and yet it was as one of a kind and unique as his hat. Hatter looked at it, taking note of Mr. Mode as he did so, and listened as he explained the meaning behind the gift. Hatter almost cried as he listened and held the picture close. Thank you sir. I will cherish it forever as well as the lesson I have learned from it.

Hatter went to store it in the lining of his hat when he remembered it was no longer on his head. He blushed a bit and placed the photo into the pocket of the jacket he had on. As he did so, he couldn't help but chuckle at Mr. Mode. The man was almost weirder than he was and it was hard to beat Hatter in the oddity department. He was an oddball for a living almost. He had managed to go from a heart to heart to a serious conversation quicker than anyone Hatter had ever met. Nonetheless his face lit up as what Mr. Mode had said registered. He could stay here with his friends and continue going to school?! This had to be a joke or a prank and the cameras would pop out any second telling him YOU'RE ON *FILL IN THE BLANK SHOW* AND YOU'VE JUST BEEN OWNED or something but the cameras didn't come. It was true.

Hatter grinned his crooked grin and knew he had made his decision. He would stay here and study for a while and see what would happen over time. Maybe he would stay and maybe he would go but he could stay here for now, at his home away from home. Hatter bent and kissed Mr. Mode's hand although he fought the urge to try to show his appreciation moreso. Hatter truly liked this man and was honored to have him as the guidance counselor. He knew this guy cared and would do him no wrong. Hatter smiled at EJ and than muttered, Thank you... for everything sir. before falling silent and staring at the floor as he blushed a bit. He knew he was begin sappy and childish but this man had just made his day in ways that Syrus doubted anyone would truly understand.

EJ was now confused. No, he was beyond confused. He honestly had no idea what the hell was going on. He’d made a passing comment about there possibly being a new university addition to the school, and now Hatter was....well, he assumed being Hatter. From what he’d gleaned from their short time together, Hatter wasn’t....what was the word? Normal. Not that EJ had ever met anyone that could be considered remotely “normal”, nor did he even think normality was a real thing, but that was beside the point. But, nope. Here was a teenager EJ had only just met, probably at least ten years his junior, kissing his hand and thanking him.

EJ cast a furtive glance around, waiting for the hidden cameras or something. His eyes kept darting this way and that, but the rest of his body never moved. He may have arched an eyebrow here or there, but for the most part, it was just his eyes. He was convinced that this wasn’t real, because, who the h*ll would want to go to college in the same place they’d gone to high school?! EJ himself had attended a preparatory academy for much of his schooling, so when he was offered the chance to be taught somewhere else, he’d jumped at the chance.

Since no sort of hidden camera crew or magical unicorn appeared out of nowhere, EJ fixed his gaze on Hatter. He opened his mouth and closed it several times, trying to find the words appropriate to formulate into a response to what had just happened. It was not proving easy. With unblinking eyes, and a constantly opening-and-closing mouth, EJ was sure he looked something akin to a dead fish, and it was probably pretty comical, but that didn’t help the fact that he was floundering for a response....wait. Floundering. Ha!

“You’re...welcome? he said finally.

Hatter couldn't help but break out in hysterical, gleeful laughter as he watched his guidance counselor fumble for the right words to say. Hatter knew he was weird, an odd duck of sorts, and he knew that he could make people speechless. Nonetheless it never ceased to make him laugh.

After a long stretch of uncontrollable laughter, Hatter managed to calm himself down and begin to gain his breath back. He settled back into his seat and looked at Mr. EJ, trying to look serious but knowing full well that the giant smile ruined the effect. After a moment he gave it up and proceeded to smile his crooked grin, showing the world he was in a mood no one could ruin.

Hatter decided he needed to explain himself to EJ and so he began. I know it seems odd that I'd want to stay here for college when I go here now for high school. I know it seems like a step backwards. The truth is, I love it here. I feel at home here. I have friends here and a second family of sorts, as crazy as they may be. EJ, I'm happy I get to stay here because I won't be losing my family and friends again... at least not until I know for sure what I want to do with my life. I love designing but I'd rather be here and designing than somewhere else where no one will know me and I'll have to start anew before I'm ready to. And furthermore, I have found love here. I don't want to leave that until I know. I know I seem crazy, and maybe I am, but I know I want to stay here and I an overjoyed that I can.

Now that Hatter felt he had explained himself thoroughly and possibly made a fool of himself, he fell silent and slumped back into his chair. His smile was not as bright as usual but his eyes showed all the brightness and happiness that anyone would need to truly know how he felt.
