Kevin walked down the hall, a paper in her hand that read "DORM H". Her other hand clutched a trolley with her bags perched on top of it. Each room she passed, she checked the letter on the door. E, F, G. There it was. Dorm H. Her new home away from home. Kevin tentatively reached for the handle and opened the door slowly, peeking inside before entering the empty room. She pushed her things over to an empty bed and sat down for a moment to look around. Two beds were made up, meaning she had two roommates. She ran her hand through her tousled bright red hair and reached for the bag that was labeled "BEDDING" and unzipped it to make her bed.
After the bed was made, she packed her clothes in the drawers by her bed and put some other things away. Her school bag was already full of supplies, so she dropped it next to her bed. She stood up and walked over to the window and opened it, feeling slightly claustrophobic. A bird sat on a branch and sang its song, and she whistled back. Whistling she could do; it was talking she always had trouble with. Luckily, birds didn't talk either, so she just continued whistling her tune, not noticing when the door to her dorm opened and somebody walked in.

Peg hitched her backpack higher up on her shoulders as she trudged back to her dorm. Her face was splattered with green paint from the class she had just left. What was it with freshman boys thinking that they had to start a paint war just because it was there? This wasn't kindergarten anymore, after all. She sighed and tried to wipe some of the mess from her hair, only causing the strands to slap her in the face and smear more paint across her nose.
This is why I hate boys, she thought miserably.
She walked into her dorm, throwing the door open with careless abandon, threw her whiteboard onto her bed, and stalked into the bathroom. Not once did she notice the red-headed girl standing by the window. Once in the bathroom, she wiped her face off as best as she could, not entirely cleansing her blue locks of the goopy green menace. She stared at her reflection for a moment, glancing at her throat which hadn't produced a sound since her birth. Then at her hair, which was still flecked with drying paint that probably wouldn't come out without a good shower.
Peg walked back into the dorm and looked up. Standing by the window, whistling was some red-head. Across the dorm was Peg's whiteboard, her only means of communication as this girl probably did not know sign language.

Chris bolted towards the dorm rooms as soon as the bell rang. He had found out that Peg was having a hard day and he wanted to make sure she was okay. He knew what it was like to have a bad day and have no one to tell. He also knew what it was like when his classmates decided to act a quarter of their age and try to force him to "play along". It was miserable and he didn't want Peg to be miserable She was too nice to be made sad.
He was overjoyed to see that the security guard had decided to leave his post when he got to the entrance to the girl's dorms. He walked right in no questions asked and ran down the hall until he came to Peg's dorm room. The door was open and so Chris walked in sheepishly. At first he only saw Peg, green paint spattered into her blue hair. This angered him and only furthered his reason for coming to visit her. He was about to walk up behind her and surprise her when he saw another girl in the room with red hair. He didn't recognize her and so he froze in his steps and, after a moment doubled back to the door.
Chris decided his surprise was ruined and chose to make his presence known with a knock on the door. And so he rapped his knuckles on the door and faced the two girls, waving hello and hoping the other girl wouldn't mind his impromptu visit to the girl's dorms. If she did, he would leave and come back later but he hoped she would approve. He truly wanted to go hug Peg and make sure everything was ok and help remove the green specks from her beautiful hair. If he had to leave he would but he wouldn't leave unless he was told to. He wanted to be with Peg, no matter the cost.

Kevin watched as a few more birds flitted to the branch, not even noticing that a girl had come in and gone straight to the bathroom. She continued whistling loudly at the little flying animals. She loved birds. They always wanted to talk to her, and they didn't need to hear words she couldn't think of. Plus, there was nothing cuter than a baby bird in Kevins mind. Just as she was about to close the window, she heard a knock at the door. She turned around and nearly jumped when she saw the blue haired girl and a boy already in the room. What should she do? She knew she had to say something.
"Hi." That was simple enough. "I'm Kevin." That, too. She almost never forgot her name. But now what? No words came to her mind. She just stood, frozen by the window, unable to speak. Her face turned red and her neck twitched slightly. She really hoped her mind would work enough to make it through this situation.

Peg's eyes darted to the door at the sound of a knock on the door. And of the hundreds of people that inhabited the school, it had to be Chris. Peg quickly ran a mental check to make sure she didn't look like a walking nightmare. She inwardly cringed at the paint still clinging to her hair, but there was nothing she could do about that now. She looked from him to the red-head, signing rapidly to Chris.
Please tell me you know who this is. She just randomly showed up in my dorm.
When the mystery girl said her name, Peg uttered a soundless groan. Great. A talker. It was bad enough her roommate could barely remember her own name, but now she had a bird whisperer standing in her dorm. She stood there rather awkwardly, gaping soundlessly. This was common when she was trying to convey messages to a talker without the use of her whiteboard.
She tried signing I can't talk. But hi. to the girl, but as she did so, she was making her way to her own bed and scribbled the words in her whiteboard, flashing it at the the girl with a pout.

Chris waved hi once more to the girl named... Kevin? It was an odd name for a girl but Chris wasn't about to judge her for it and so he just mentally shrugged it off and went to stand beside Peg. He looked at her and signed I missed you. Want me to get the paint out of your hair? Chris than hugged Peg, trying to show her just how much she meant to him, and looked at her eyes and her face, trying to take in her mood. He completely forgot the other girl in the room for a minute.
When reality clicked once more, Chris blushed a bit and turned to face Kevin once more. He struggled to form the word but finally said a single word, Hi before falling silent once more. He rarely spoke and he knew he would have to explain later but he could also tell Kevin seemed confused and scared and he was trying to help. He knew his speech was garbled a bit and he had a bit of a lisp of sorts but it was better than nothing. He than quickly scribbled a message on a piece of notebook paper before ripping it out and handing it to Kevin. It said:
Hi I'm Chris. This is Peg. I'm deaf and can't speak much. Peg can't speak either. Nice to meet you Kevin.
Chris gave it to Kevin and than looked at the girl as he forced himself to say Ru...R-Read? He than fell silent once more and slipped his fingers around Peg's hand. He wanted to hold her close and let her know everything would be okay. He also wanted to get the paint out of her beautiful hair. But neither of these things would be fair to the new girl standing in the room that Chris guessed was hers. He was the intruder and he would act like a guest so long as Kevin was here unless he knew she was okay with him cuddling Peg and making everything better... maybe even kissing her softly if the moment presented himself. He sighed a bit at the thought and silently hoped Kevin would leave and let him stay and be alone with Peg. He wouldn't hurt her. He just wanted to show he cared.

Kevin watched as the two used sign language to speak to eachother. She, of coarse, had no idea they were communicating. To her it looked like they were just moving their hands around randomly. Kevin continued to watch as the boy hugged the blue haired girl. Were they a couple? It would make sense. She saw the way the boy looked at the girl, and his eyes held undying affection.
Kevin tilted her head when the girl began signing at her, and was surprised when she was shown a white board with quickly written words. I can't- what was that word? She nearly jumped when the boys voice said hi. She looked up, torn from her concentration, and was handed a piece of notebook paper. She stared down at the words, silent for a minute, but was able to figure out what they meant. The boy was named Chris, and the blue haired girl was Peg. Chris, Peg, Chris, Peg, she thought as she looked back and forth between them. She was trying to commit their names to memory. She looked at the paper again. Neither of them could really speak, it said. Kevin grabbed a pencil from her side table and quickly wrote: I have expressive language disorder. It's hard to communicate. Nice meet Chris and Peg. The first part was written rather quickly, as she had written it and said it many times before. She had difficulty thinking of the last part, and it took a minute for her pencil to complete the words. She looked it over, trying to make sure it made sense, before handing it back to the boy- before handing it back to Chris. She smiled, hoping what she had written wasn't completely crazy. That had happened before. Often.

Peg beamed up at Chris as he came to stand beside her and purposely moved closer to him so that their arms brushed. She grimaced, however, when he offered to remove the paint that was clashing with her hair. Signing rapidly, she replied, I missed you, too. And I think this paint is acrylic. It's not going to come out very easily.
Even when she was a mess, Peg loved being around Chris. He made the air around her seem lighter, the light a little brighter. And it was impossible for her to still be bitter over the paint catastrophe with him in such close proximity. It seemed meaningless now. And the second he wrapped his arms around her, she forgot that there were three of them in the room. Her arms snaked around his waist, and she squeezed him tighter to her, inhaling the smell of his clothes. It wasn't until he pulled away and started scribbling on a sliver of paper that she remembered that Kevin was still in the room.
She watched the girl read hers and Chris's notes, giving a half-hearted wave and an attempt at an awkward smile.
Her expression turned to one of concerned sympathy when Chris tried to muster up some the few simple words he could say. She brushed her fingers comfortingly against his shoulder, letting them entwine with his easily as he grabbed her hand. She instinctively leaned against him, her head resting against his shoulder, her cheek rubbing against the fabric of his shirt.
Peg's eyes flitted over the writing Kevin had produced, quickly noticing the grammar error that would be unacceptable for a high school student. So she had difficulty communicating as well. She was like them in a way.
An idea popped into her head. Looking up at Chris with infatuated eyes, her fingers spoke. Think we could teach her how to sign? It might help with the disorder she has. Wiping her whiteboard clean with her sleeve, careful not to erase the little hearts and initials in the corner, she scribbled on it quickly and held it up for Kevin to read.
